Chapter Seventeen

Closing time couldn’t come soon enough for Ruby. She locked the doors and hurried to meet her sisters at the café where it was evident that Violet was as excited as she was about Jerome’s news.

More intrigued with why Jerome had bought the run-down estate, Scarlett was also pleased that they had an invite. “Nate takes his job seriously and after warning us about going back to the house and trespassing, I wasn’t sure how I’d stop you two from doing just that. Quite frankly, my sisters getting into more trouble—with or without me—was keeping me up at night. Being able to go to the estate legitimately is such a relief. I’ll meet you outside.”

How she knew that Ruby and Violet planned to go back to the estate by themselves since neither of them had mentioned it, Ruby wasn’t sure, but it wouldn’t be the first time their elder sister seemed to know what they were thinking.

Ruby paced the parking lot waiting for Scarlett to come out of the café’s back door.

“Calm down,” Violet told her.

Ruby snorted. “You’re the one making weird noises.”

It was true. Violet had a sound for every emotion and right now she was huffing which meant she was just as impatient to get to the estate.

Scarlett finally shut the door and ran down the steps with a bag slung over her shoulder. “Ready?”

Violet huffed once more. “No, we thought we’d have coffee first.”

“Oh boy. Sarcasm. Good way to start the trip, Vi. You know I must leave the kitchen just so for the next day.”

“We know,” Violet and Ruby chorused.

“Good. Then stop fussing and let’s go.”

They piled into Ruby’s car and before long were headed out of town in the direction of Harmony Beach. The estate was about halfway between there and Cozy Hollow. There was a car in front of the door.

“Looks like he’s already here,” Ruby’s excitement at finally getting inside the house jumped up a notch.

“He has an exceptionally nice car for a principal,” Scarlett noted.

“I think there is a great deal we don’t know about Jerome,” Ruby agreed.

Violet crossed her arms. “I don’t care what state this place is in; he must have plenty of money to have bought it and that car is a giveaway.”

“Please do not talk about money to him,” Scarlett begged.

“Fine. But aren’t you curious how a principal can afford an estate?”

“Of course, but that’s not the point. We don’t know him well enough to make it okay to dig into his personal life.”

Violet shrugged. “Then I suggest we get to know him better quickly. That way I can dig a little while we find out the Swanson’s secrets at the same time.”

“You two will be the death of me,” Scarlett muttered.

“It will be fine. Jerome is really chilled out,” Ruby assured her.

Scarlett rolled her eyes and walked sedately to the heavy door which stood open.

“Hello?” Ruby called into the wide entrance way.

They heard his footsteps before Jerome appeared down the far end and hurried toward them. “Hi! Thanks for coming.
